Abstract

Textbooks are one of the important learning source in teaching and learning process. Therefore, the reading text of a good textbook must be appropriate for the level of the students. To analyze it, a book readability test is needed. The aim of the study is to investigate the readability of students’ textbook on “Interlanguage : English for Senior High School Students XI”, English textbook for XI Senior High School that published by Department of National Education . Descriptive qualitative design is used in the study. Flesch Reading Ease formula from Rudolph Flesch is used to analyze the text of the textbook. To make the study valid, the theory used to analyzed the data will be strengthened by another theory from Rudolph Flesch and J. Peter Kincaid namely Flesch-Kincaid readability test. The finding revelas that there are 7 categories level in the textbook. From the analysis, it was found that only 9 text of 43 texts that are appropriate with students’ level. The average of readability score shows that the texts of the textbook more appropriate for students in 8th – 9 th grade. The texts that are not equal to the student’s level should be revised. Publishers and teachers are advised to pay more attention in arranging the material according to the students’ level, for example by using Flesch Reading Ease formula, because it is approved measurement for better quality textbook for students.
