Abstract

Electronic dictionary is an essential tool to help the students in learning English. It is a portable electronic device that serves the digital form of any kind of dictionary. Electronic dictionaries have become available on mobile device and smartphone. It makes ED popular with EFL students especially in English Department. Clearly, electronic dictionary is faster in search speed, lighter in weight, smaller in size and more mobile than the paper one. And now, using electronic dictionary in EFL classroom has gradually become an alternative for many students. Considering the explanation, the researcher has some research problems. Those are what are students’ perspective on the use of electronic dictionaries in learning English and what are students problems on the use of electronic dictionaries in learning English. The design of this study is survey research using quantitative approach. The researcher used questionnaire as instrument to collect data. The questionnaire is adapted from Reza Dashtestani and Sayyed Siddiek. The researcher analyzed the data through computing data into Microsoft excel. The subjects of the study are 100 English Department students. They are from second, fourth, and sixth semester. The result of the study shows that positive responses are given by the students’ general view about electronic dictionaries in learning English. It means that most of the students agree and have positive responses that electronic dictionaries can support their learning English. This tool can help to motivate their learning process. Electronic dictionaries can increase their vocabulary knowledge, grammatical, and pronunciation. On the other hand, students have some problems when they are using electronic dictionaries. The common problem is that the students can get information quickly and become soonest forgotten. The other problem is that the meaning in ED is not relevant to the context. The third problem is that the students get difficulty to choose among the definition.
