Abstract

Referential cohesion is to retrieve presupposed information in text and must be identifiable for it to be considered as cohesive. Referencing indicates how the writer introduces participants and keeps track of them throughout the text. The objective of this study is to know the types referential cohesion in The Fault in Our Stars by John Green and to know the most dominant types of reference cohesion in The Fault in Our Stars by John Green. In order to achieve the objective of this study, the researcher used descriptive qualitative to analyze from the novel. The researcher would analyze the reference cohesion that found in this novel. There are two instruments of this research. Those are primary instrument and secondary instrument. The researcher herself is the primary instrument and the books that related to the research is the secondary instrument. The result of this research showed that there are all types of reference cohesion in The Fault in Our Stars by John Green Novel. Those are personal reference, demonstrative reference, and comparative reference. The researcher took 22 paragraphs in the first chapter. There are 149 personal references found in The Fault in Our Stars by John Green Novel. The researcher also found 12 demonstrative reference and 11 comparative reference. The researcher uses percentage of the result. Personal reference is 86,6%, comparative reference is 6,4%, and demonstrative reference is 6,9%. From the data obtained, the researcher concluded that the most dominant types of reference cohesion in The Fault in Our Stars by John Green is personal reference that is 149 or in percentage is 86,6%.
