Abstract
As we know that people have different characteristics in their interaction. Thus, they use polite utterances to consider what the purpose of their speech. This phenomenon often happens in the classroom interaction. The lecturer and students use polite utterance to avoid the use of speech acts that are potentially damaging. This is because the important function of speech is the main tool to control the classroom, and understanding the kinds of the function of speech and politeness strategy in classroom interaction will make the classroom activities more effective and efficient. Therefore, the research about the kinds of the function of speech and the types of politeness strategy is very important to be studied. This research uses descriptive qualitative research as the method. The focus of this study is to find out the kinds of the function of speech applied in classroom interaction based on Jiang’s theory and the types of politeness strategies used by lecturer and students based on Brown and Levinson’s theory. The subjects of this study are the most-interactive class of each three different courses of English Department of STAIN Kediri. The first class is Sentence and Paragraph Writing. The second class is Speaking 3 and another class is Reading Comprehension 3. The findings revealed that the lecturer and students use all of the function of speech; academic instruction, motivations, evaluations, and classroom management. Based on Brown and Levinson’s theory, not all the types of those strategies are employed by lecturer and students. There are only 11 types out of 15 strategies of positive politeness strategy and all of the cases of bald on-record where the lecturer and students applied politeness strategies in the classroom interaction.
