Abstract

Writing for Indonesian students' English Education Departments is one of the most challenging aspects of advancing English skills. Due to the fact that English is a foreign language in Indonesia. Writing an academic English review serves as a demonstration of the English foreign language students’ writing ability. A summary is a condensed version of a piece of work that condenses the basic facts and elements. The researcher aims to conduct a study about linguistic problems in writing English academic summary by students. The descriptive qualitative method is employed by the researcher in this research. The object is 5th semester English Education Department students of IAIN Kediri in the academic year 2020-2021. Regarding the process, the researcher first collected the documents of English academic summary writing from the students majoring English Education Department of State Islamic Institute (IAIN) of Kediri. Then, the researcher analyzed the sentences produced by each summary writing document of each student. The data collection was stopped when the data analysis was redundant. 3 summary writing documents were the final stop of data collection as the source of the study. The study revealed that: sentential problems appeared in the term of sentence. Essentially, the linguistic features in writing English academic summary cover the mastery of the rules of grammar. Four aspects of linguistic features are: syntax, grammar, vocabulary, and mechanics. Sentence fragment, choppy sentence, run-on sentence, and stringy sentence are usually integral to the grammatical errors. In the term of definition, sentencial problems by meaning is integral to semantic errors, and sentencial problem by function are involved in the grammatical errors. Sentencial problems by funtcion are dominant in the development of an English academic summary writing by the English foreign language students of IAIN Kediri. The most sentential problem by function deal with the use of definite and indefinite article. In conclusion, the rules of English grammatical pattern are substantial in developing an English Academic summary writing for the college students. The students must advance a proper academic writing ability and a fixed understanding of correct grammatical structure mastery. In addition, a suitable guidance on writing English academic summary must be figured out in order to produce a well-written assignment in writing.
