Abstract

Speaking is one of the important skills that should be mastered by students in learning English. However, many students still experience difficulties in speaking due to limited vocabulary, lack of confidence, pronunciation errors, and low classroom participation. Based on the preliminary observation conducted in class 7D of MTs. Hidayatus Sholihin Gurah Kediri, most students were passive during speaking activities and had difficulties expressing ideas orally. Therefore, this research was conducted to investigate the implementation of conventional spinning wheel media in speaking class. This research applied Classroom Action Research (CAR) by using the model of Kemmis and Mc Taggart which consisted of planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. The research involved 28 seventh grade students of MTs. Hidayatus Sholihin Gurah Kediri and was conducted in two cycles. The researcher used speaking tests and observation sheets to collect the data. The speaking tests focused on vocabulary, pronunciation, fluency, and grammar, while the observation sheets were used to identify students’ participation and responses during the learning process. The findings showed that the implementation of conventional spinning wheel media improved students’ speaking achievement and classroom participation. In the preliminary test, only 5 out of 28 students (17.86%) achieved the Minimum Mastery Criterion (KKM). After the implementation of Cycle 1, the number increased to 15 students (53.57%). Furthermore, in Cycle 2, 21 out of 28 students (75%) successfully achieved the KKM. In addition, students became more enthusiastic, confident, and active during speaking activities. The use of smaller groups, additional vocabularies, and keyword preparation also helped students organize their ideas more effectively when speaking. Therefore, it can be concluded that conventional spinning wheel media gave positive contributions to improving students’ speaking skill in descriptive text material.
