Abstract
Fear of Missing Out (FoMO) has become a growing social phenomenon in digital society, particularly among Gen Z who are highly connected to technology and social media. As digital culture increasingly shapes communication, identity, and social interaction, movies can function as cultural representations that reflect these contemporary social issues. In this context, Ron's Gone Wrong becomes important to be analyzed because the movie portrays the influence of technology and digital validation on social experiences and the sense of belonging, especially through the presence of the B-Bot as an interesting representation of digital culture. Therefore, the primary aim of this study is to analyze the signs and the denotative, connotative and myth meanings that represent FoMO in the film. This study employed a descriptive qualitative with a content analysis method and used Barthes’ semiotic analysis (1991) to analyze the data. The data of this study were obtained from selected scenes and dialogues in Ron's Gone Wrong, which was accessed through Disney+, that represent Fear of Missing Out (FoMO). The signs were analyzed and categorized into three levels of meaning proposed by Barthes, namely denotative meaning, connotative meaning, and myth, in order to identify how the film constructs meanings related to technology, social interaction, and digital culture. The findings of this study showed that Ron's Gone Wrong represented FoMO through verbal and visual signs related to dialogue, expressions, social interactions, and the use of B-Bots in digital life. Secondly, through Barthes’ semiotic analysis, the study found that FoMO is represented through two dimensions, namely Personal FoMO (7) and Social FoMO (5). Personal FoMO is reflected as the need to belong, while the Social FoMO appears through representations of social exclusion. The movie also constructs the myth that social connection, relevance, and acceptance in modern society increasingly depend on technology and digital interaction. Furthermore, the movie represents the current phenomenon of mobile socialization, which is shown through the personification of B-Bot as a symbol of smartphones and digital communication in contemporary society.
