Abstract
Malikatuzzahro, Shofia. 2026. “The Effectiveness of the GitMind Platform onStudents’ Descriptive Writing Skill at a Junior High School in Nganjuk.” Thesis. English Education Department, Faculty of Education and Teacher Training, State Islamic University of Syekh Wasil (UIN) Kediri. Advisors: (I) H. Burhanudin Syaifulloh, M.Ed., Ph.D., (II) Renita Donasari, M.Pd.Keywords: Descriptive writing skills, effectiveness, gitmind platform Writing descriptive text is one of the essential skills in English language learning. However, many students experienced difficulties in developing the content of their writing and organizing ideas into coherent descriptive texts. This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of digital mind mapping through theGitMind platform on students’ descriptive writing skills at the seventh grade of MTsN 09 Nganjuk. The GitMind platform, a digital mind mapping tool, was used to help students generate, organize, and develop their ideas through colorful visual features, various shapes, and editable branches during the writing process. Therefore, this study examined whether there was a significant difference in descriptive writing achievement between students who were taught using digital mind mapping through the GitMind platform and those who were taught using conventional mind mapping. This study employed a quantitative approach using a quasi-experimental design with a pre-test and post-test. The research participants were seventh grade students with comparable English achievement based on the school’s examination scores. The subjects of this study consisted of 20 students from class VII-A as the experimental group and 20 students from class VII-D as the control group. The data were collected through pre-tests and post-tests and were analyzed using Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA) with SPSS version 25.The results showed that there was a significant difference between the experimental and control groups after the treatment. The significance value was 0.041, which was lower than 0.05, indicating that the null hypothesis (H0) was rejected and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted. The mean score of the experimental group increased from 66.00 in the pre-test to 78.85 in the post-test, while the mean score of the control group increased from 64.40 to 76.80. These findings indicated that the GitMind platform was effective in supporting students’descriptive writing skills by providing colorful visual features, various shapes, editable branches, and a well organized mind mapping structure. These features helped students visualize relationships between ideas, connect main ideas with supporting details and organize their ideas more systematically than when using conventional mind mapping. Therefore, the GitMind platform can be used as an effective alternative medium for teaching descriptive writing at the junior high school level.
