Abstract

Speaking skills are one of the most important aspects of learning English, but they are also among the most challenging skills for students. Many students still face difficulties, such as limited vocabulary, a lack of confidence, and low motivation when speaking English. With the advancement of technology, learning apps like Duolingo have become widely used to support the language learning process. However, most previous research has focused more on quantitative outcomes and has not yet explored the use in learning speaking, particularly regarding the use of such apps at the high school level. Therefore, this study aims to explore the use of the Duolingo app in supporting students’ speaking skills. This study employed a descriptive qualitative reseach method, with the research subject s being students in class XI-8 at sman 4 kediri. Data collection techniques included observation, interviews, and documentation The research instruments consisted of observation sheets, interview guidelines, and documentation. Data analysis was conducted through the stages of data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The research findings indicate that the Duolingo app plays in supporting students’ speaking skills through interactives in the app. The learning process consists of several stages: introduction, demonstration, practice, discussion, and drawing conclusions. Additionally, using this app helps students become more motivated in practicing speaking, and encourages independent learning both inside and outside the classroom. However, there are several challenges faced, namely internal challenges such as limited vocabulary and pronunciation difficulties, as well as external challenges such as unstable internet connections and technical issues with the microphone feature.
