Abstract
Speaking is a fundamental skill in English language learning, as it enables students to effectively convey ideas, opinions, and information in oral communication. However, many 10th-grade students at SMAN 1 Kandat struggle with speaking, particularly in terms of pronunciation, fluency, vocabulary, and self-confidence. Therefore, this study aims to test the effectiveness of Khan Academy Kids as a digital storytelling application in improving students speaking skill to 10th-grade students at SMAN 1 Kandat. This study used a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental design, divided into two classes, namely class X-5 as the experimental group consisting of 35 students and class X-8 as the control group consisting of 35 students. This study was conducted for 5 sessions, including a pre-test in the first session, three treatment sessions, and a post-test in the last session. The experimental group was taught to use Khan Academy Kids for interactive digital storytelling, while the control group used PowerPoint. Students' speaking performance was evaluated based on grammar, vocabulary, comprehension, fluency, and pronunciation. The results indicated that the experimental group achieved greater improvement than the control group. The average score of the experimental group was 23.65, while the average score of the control class was 21.91. The Mann-Whitney U test showed the Asymp. Sig. (2-tailed) value = 0.136, which is higher than 0.05. Therefore, H₀ was accepted, and Hₐ was rejected, meaning there is no significant difference on speaking skill between students’ taught using Khan Academy Kids and those taught using PowerPoint.
