Abstract
Speaking is an essential skill in learning English as a foreign language (EFL), yet many students still confront difficulty expressing their ideas fluently and accurately due to limited interactive learning opportunities. Innovative teaching strategies are needed to establish a more interactive and meaningful learning context. Focus Group Discussion (FGD) in combination with the debate are considered an effective strategy in teaching speaking; the integration of a plot twist further enhances this method by encouraging students to think critically and respond more spontaneously. This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of Innovative FGD with Debate Plot Twist on students’ speaking skills at SMAN 1 Pare. This research employed a quasi-experimental design involving two groups, each consisting of 30 eleventh-grade students. The experimental group was taught by FGD with Debate Plot Twist, while the control group was taught by conventional FGD. The data were analyzed by scoring students’ speaking performance based on five components by Brown and Abeywickrama. The data was presented by using ANCOVA. The findings revealed a significant difference between the experimental and control groups (p = 0.044 < 0.05). The experimental group achieved a higher adjusted mean score (72.79) than the control group (70.06). In terms of the speaking aspect, fluency was the highest, while grammar was the lowest in both groups. These results indicate that the experimental group performed better after controlling for initial ability. In conclusion, Innovative Focus Group Discussion with Debate Plot Twist has a significant effect on students’ speaking skills, particularly in improving fluency and overall speaking performance.
