Abstract

Writing is often considered one of the most difficult English skills, and many students still demonstrate low ability across the five elements of writing. Therefore, appropriate and engaging media are needed to support students in developing their writing skills. Animated video is assumed to be an effective medium due to its visual appeal, including the combination of images, colors, and sound that can attract students’ attention during the learning process. This research aims to investigate the effectiveness of animated videos from the English Fairy Tales YouTube channel on students' narrative writing skills. This study employed a quantitative method with a quasi-experimental design involving two groups: an experimental group and a control group. The experimental group consisted of the tenth-grade students of Pemasaran 1, while the control group consisted of Pemasaran 2 at SMK Pawyatan Daha 1 Kediri. The experimental group was taught using animated videos from the English Fairy Tales YouTube channel, while the control group was taught using picture series. The instrument used in this research was a writing test, including pre-test and post-test. The data were analyzed using the independent sample t-test. The result of the study showed that there was no significant difference in students’ narrative writing skills between the experimental and control groups. The significance value obtained was .754, which is higher than 0.05. Therefore, the null hypothesis is received. It can be concluded that the use of animated videos from the English Fairy Tales YouTube channel is not effective in improving the narrative writing skills of the tenth-grade students at SMK Pawyatan Daha 1 Kediri.
