Abstract

Key Words Novel, The Great Gatsby, Deixis, Referent The research is aimed to know the type of deixis especially in novel entitled The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, published by Charles Scribner's Son This study investigates the types of deixis which occur in the dialogues spoken by the characters. In this research, the writer uses a descriptive analysis as research design to analyze the types and the reference of deixis which are found in unit alaysis. The data are collected by underlined the interrogative dialogues containing deixis. classifying the data based on the each types of deixis and then investigating the reference of deixis. The data are analyzed using George Yule's theory. As the result of types, the researcher found 139 utterances occur in person deixis, 8 utterancesoccur in temporal deixis and 14 utterances occur in spatial deixis. It means that the most characters use personal deixis in their conversation especially in interrogative utterances. As the result of reference, the researcher found 139 deictic expression as reference in person deixis (29 first person deixis, 69 second person deixis, 41 third person deixis), 8 deictic expression as reference in temporal deixis (5 proximal and 3 distal), 14 deictic expression as reference in spatial deixis (6 proximal and 8 distal). So the total is, 161 references. Finally, it suggest, for everyone who are interested in studying deixis especially in the novel, they have to understand more about the theory of deixis first, it included types of deixis and reference that make clear the deictic expression
