Advisor: 1) Drs. Agus Edi Winarto, M. Pd. 2) Bahruddin, SS., M. Pd. Keywords: The Problem, Modal Auxiliaries English is one of the International languages, which is used by the most people in the world. People all over the world have been using English either in formal or informal situation includes in Indonesia. In Indonesia English is considered as a foreign language. It is taught from elementary school up to the university degree. Nevertheless, there is still found the difficulties on applying one of the components of structure, that is, modal auxiliary. Therefore, the researcher described the problems faced by the students in applying modal auxliaries and the causing factors at eighth grade of MTsN Mojoroto Kediri. This researcher used descriptive qualitative research design. The number of the students at eighth-grade at MTsN Mojoroto Kediri was 32. The researcher collected the data by interview and test as instruments. The researcher analyzed the data using descriptive analysis and presenting the findings in percentage. The degree of difficulty in can found in this research is 75 with the average of error 53,57%. While the degree of difficulty in could found in this research is 63 with the average of error 56,25%. And then the degree of difficulty in must found in this research is 96 with the average of error 57,14%. Next the degree of difficulty in have to found in this research is 83 with the average of error 59,29%. It concludes that almost all of the students at eighth grade of MTSN Mojoroto Kediri faced the difficulties in meaning and function of modal auxiliaries.
