Khusna, Asmaul. 2015. The Effectiveness of Teaching Writing Recount Text Using Four-Square Writing Method at the Tenth Grade of MA Sunan Kalijogo Mojo Kediri". Advisor | Drs. Agus Edi Winarto, M.Pd and Advisor II Sri Wahyuni, M.Pd. Key Words: Four Square Writing, Effectiveness, Writing Skill, Recount text Students state that writing is a difficult thing. They do not know how to start to write down their idea, feel hesitate in making errors, and it is so time consuming. With those reasons, the teacher should aplies an interesting method. One of the methods is Four Square writing, it is a method in teaching writing that applicable across grade level and curiculum areas. It is a guide outline in making a good writing by using a graphic organizer. The project is about a study of the effectiveness of Four Square writing in teaching writing at the tenth grade of MA Sunan Kalijogo Mojo Kediri. The objective of this study is to know whether Four Square writing is effective in teaching writing for the tenth grade of MA Sunan Kalijogo Mojo Kediri or not. The design of this research is quasi experimental. The population of this study is the tenth grade of MA Sunan Kalijogo in academic year 2014-2015. There are five classes; they are X IPA-1, X IPA-2, X IPS-1, X IPS-2, and X-BAHASA. The sampling process is no randomized sampling. The researcher takes X IPA-1 as the control group and X IPA-2 as the experiment group, it is based on the teacher guidance that the two classes have equal ability in writing. The instruments used for measuring achievement are pre-test and post-test. The score of both of the tests is calculated by using T-Test through SPSS 21 program. The distribution of data in dependent variable is normal with the significant value p (0.438) ≥ a (0.05). Then the Levene's test result shows the significant value p (0.56) ≥ a (0.05). It means that the variance of experiment and control group is equal across group. In other word, the writing ability of the two groups is almost same. Then there is no relationship between pre-test and post-test, as the evidence the result of significant value is 0,00 <0,05. The result of statistical computation of T-Test reveals that the significant at (p) 0.00 (a) 0.05 level. Since the significant value is smaller than 0.05, there is enough evidence to reject the null hypothesis, and then the alternative hypothesis is accepted. It means that the students who are taught by using Four Square Writing method have better skill on writing than students who are taught without Four Square Writing method. In other word, the Four Square Writing method is effective to teach writing.
