Abstract
Oktadia, Sonya Haspri. Advisor: (1) Drs. Agus Edi Winarto, M.Pd. (2) Bahruddin S.S. M.Pd.: "An Analysis on Language Features in Narrative Texts Written by the Second Graders of SMAN 8 Kediri", English Department Faculty of Education, State College for Islam Studies (STAIN) Kediri, 2015. Key Words: Writing, Narrative Text, Language Features. Yet, Indonesian students face a lot of text genres to be learned such as: recount, narrative, procedure, exposition, description, and report. Moreover, the text type focused in this study is Narrative. In the tenth grade of senior high school, the students have been taught narrative text, and they have to be able to write their own narrative text. Although the students have learned about narrative text, it is not easy for them to comprehend narrative text. They have to recognize the generic structure and language features of narrative text. This study uses descriptive qualitative research as the method. The focus of this study is to know what language features of narrative text in a short story written by the second graders of SMAN 8 Kediri. The subject of the study is the students of XI IPS 2, in second semester of SMAN 8 Kediri in the academic year 2014/2015. The data were collected through test. The researcher used Emi Emilia's theory about language features of narrative text: using time sequence, simple past tense as dominant tense, action verbs, dialogue or verbal process, and descriptive language. The result showed that all of the students were able to apply five points of narrative's language features. Those five points are time sequence, simple past tense, action verb, dialogue or verbal process and descriptive language. However, one student did not use or apply the time sequence and only four students applied dialogue or verbal process. Although the students were able to apply narrative's language features in their writing, most of the students face some problems in their writing such as the use of past tense, obeying sentence structure, errors in spelling, punctuation, and capitalization. Therefore, the writing process is important to reduce errors in writing. Besides, the teacher should be aware at students' writing process and give feedback or comments to the students' writing which is very useful suggestion for them in the next writing activity.
