Abstract
This research entitled "The Implementation of Genre-Based Approach in Teaching Writing to 11 Grade at SMKN 1 Kota Kediri" aims to investigate how English teachers implement the Genre-Based Approach (GBA) in teaching writing and to identify the difficulties they encounter during the process. This study was motivated by the importance of writing skills in vocational high schools, where students are expected to master both practical and academic competencies. The research involved one English teacher and students of class XI TITL (Electrical Power Installation Engineering) at SMKN 1 Kota Kediri as the subjects. The researcher employed a qualitative descriptive method by conducting classroom observations and interviews with the English teacher. Data were collected through video-recorded observations and structured interviews focusing on the application of the four GBA stages: Building Knowledge of the Field (BKoF), Modeling of the Text (MoT), Joint Construction of the Text (JCoT), and Independent Construction of the Text (ICoT). The results showed that the teacher applied the GBA stages appropriately by adjusting learning materials to suit students' majors to increase engagement. However, several difficulties were encountered, such as time constraints, lack of appropriate learning materials, students' low interest and motivation, and limited vocabulary mastery. Despite these challenges, the implementation of GBA was effective in improving students' understanding of text structure and writing competence. This study highlights the importance of contextualizing English writing materials for vocational students and recommends teachers to optimize time management and develop vocational-specific learning resources.
