Abstract

Speaking is a fundamental component of foreign language learning and is often considered the most challenging among the four language skills. It serves as a medium for conveying information, expressing ideas, and sharing emotions. This study aims to explore the speaking difficulties encountered by fourth-semester English department students at IAIN Kediri, the underlying factors contributing to these challenges, and strategies used to overcome them. This study employed a qualitative method using a descriptive case study approach. The findings show that students face various difficulties in speaking, namely the problem is fear mistakes, shyness, lack of pronounciation, lack of vocabulary, and the problem is nothing to say. To overcome these challenges, students employed several strategies, such as practicing speaking regularly, watching English-language media to improve vocabulary and comprehension, preparing materials before presentations, and engaging in conversations with peers or within English speaking communities. In addition, some students enhanced their vocabulary through reading, writing, and listening to English in meaningful contexts. These strategies have been shown to improve their fluency and confidence in speaking.
