Abstract
This study analyzes idiomatic expressions in Jumanji: The Next Level, focusing on their types and contextual meanings. Using a qualitative descriptive method, data were collected through the movie script and repeated viewings to understand idiom usage in dialogue. Idioms were classified based on O'Dell and McCarthy’s (2010) six categories: similes, binomials, proverbs, euphemisms, clichés, and fixed statements. Contextual interpretation applied Firth’s (1957) theory, emphasizing social and situational contexts. The analysis process included identifying, coding, categorizing idioms, interpreting meanings, and calculating frequency. A total of 67 idiomatic expressions were found, with 35 clearly fitting the six categories. Similes appeared once (3%), proverbs and euphemisms twice each (6%), clichés in eight instances (23%), and fixed statements dominated with 22 expressions (62%). Binomials were largely absent. The findings show that fixed statements are the most commonly used idioms, reflecting frequent usage in everyday speech to convey figurative meaning directly. The study highlights the significant role of context in understanding idiomatic expressions, which often differ from literal meanings. These results contribute to English language teaching by emphasizing the importance of authentic materials, like movie, to help learners grasp informal and figurative language naturally through context-rich dialogue.
