Abstract

Limited vocabulary remains one of the key challenges in learning English among Indonesian high school students. Conventional teaching methods and lack of student motivation often result in poor vocabulary acquisition, which subsequently affects their overall language proficiency. To address this problem, the integration of digital technology particularly mobile learning applications is seen as a promising solution. This study investigates the effectiveness of the WordUp application in enhancing vocabulary mastery among tenth-grade students at SMAN 6 Kediri. The study employs a quantitative method using a quasi-experimental design involving a control and an experimental group. A total of 60 students participated, divided equally into the two groups. The experimental group used the WordUp app, while the control group relied on printed dictionaries. Data were collected through pre-tests and post-tests consisting of 30 multiple-choice questions. The results were analyzed using ANCOVA determine the effectiveness of the treatment. The findings indicate a significant improvement in the vocabulary scores of the experimental group, with a mean post-test score of 84.23 compared to 67.20 in the control group. The ANCOVA results showed a significance value of 0.000 (Sig. < 0.05), confirming that the difference is statistically significant. Therefore, the use of the WordUp application is proven to be an effective digital learning tool for improving vocabulary mastery in secondary education. This suggests that incorporating mobile assisted vocabulary learning tools can greatly improve students' language learning. Educators looking to update their English language teaching methods should consider using such tools.
