Abstract
The research discusses the importance of language as a tool for communication, highlighting its role in connecting people, sharing experiences, and enhancing intellectual abilities. Effective communication is emphasized as essential for interacting with others and achieving communication goals. The discussion touches on speech act theory, particularly focusing on expressive speech acts, which serve to convey emotions and attitudes in conversations. Overall, the text underscores the critical role of language in human communication and understanding. This descriptive qualitative research aims to describe the types of expressive speech act in the movie "Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile”. Utilizing a naturalistic approach, the researcher, as the primary instrument, focuses on the movie set in New York City, directed by Will Speck and Josh Gordon, and released on October 7, 2022. The study involves two types of data: primary data from the movie and its subtitles, and secondary data from relevant literature. The researcher collects data by watching the movie multiple times to understand the storyline and focus on dialogues. The data analysis involves mapping expressive speech acts, categorizing relevant conversations, and analyzing dialogues to determine the use of expressive speech acts. The findings revealed that there are 2 utterances (14.29%) of pleasure, 2 utterances (14.29%) of like, 4 utterances (28.57%) of dislike, 4 utterances (28.57%) of sorrow, 1 utterance (7.14%) of pain, and 1 utterance (7.14%) of joy. Therefore, the most frequently used expressive speech acts by the main character, Josh Primm, are dislike and sorrow, each accounting for 28.57% of the total utterances.
