Abstract
This research discusses illocutionary speech act in facebook conversation. The researcher analyzes the facebook conversation of English Department '11 who often express their emotions in social media. Speech act is a subfield of pragmatics which concerned with the ways in which words can be used not only to present information but also to carry out actions. The aim of this research is to know the categories of illocutionary speech act used in the status, comments and replies in English Department '11 Facebook conversation and to know how the realization of the speech acts is used in the conversation. This study uses descriptive qualitative method. The writer used theory of speech acts by Austin. The researcher collects the data from the facebook status updates, the comment and the replies made by the members of English Department '11. It consists of 35 items from 1 October 2014 to 31 October 2014. The researcher identify the illocutionary speech act. Then the researcher chooses and selects the data dealing with the problems to be investigated. She classified the data on speech act theory. The research finding shows that the most dominant category is expositives. It consits of 21 items. In addition, verdictives are 8 items, then commissives 2 items. The last category is exercitives 1 item. The realization of the speech acts in the conversation can be seen from IFID. Category of IFIDS is directive mood 9 items. The second rank is interrogative mood 8 items then performative mood 7 items. The intonation is 1 item. Furthermore, the mood of the verb are 5 items then assertion 4 items. The last is word order 1 item.
