Abstract

Cases of power relation in educational institutions always happen. Movies often reflect complex social issues, including in educational institutions. This study aims to investigate depiction of power relations using the transitivity processes within educational institutions in the 'indignation' movie as a representative and also to investigate the underlying ideology behind the representation. This study is a qualitative study that uses the critical discourse analysis including description, interpretation, and explanation, is used. Furthemore, for analyzing the linguistic properties, Halliday's systemic functional grammar is applied in terms of transitivity process to get the ideational meta-functions of the 'indignation' movie. The data are taken from the transcript of the 'indignation' movie. The data are analyzed using a using a transitivity process. The result of the study shows that 39 transitivity processes consist of 13 material processes, 12 mental processes, 6 verbal processes, 4 relational attributive processes, 3 relational identifying processes, and 1 existential process. The behavioral process is not found in the transcript of the movie 'indignation'. From the transitivity processes, the 'indignation' movie largely represents the occurrence of power relation within educational institutions. Marcus Messner, the main character, is a student who tries to defend himself, defend his ideas, and oppose the conservative institution culture. Marcus is often the one who is blamed, objectified, and treated unfairly because of the principles he holds. As a student who tries to defend himself from the barrage of questions and pressure from educational institution authorities, Marcus faces injustice. These events, as depicted in the 'indignation' movie, show that power relation within educational institutions have always existed. This representation shows that the filmmaker wants to criticize and expose the dominance of conservative ideology in the educational environment, as well as show sympathy for the individual's struggle against an oppressive system. Thus, the 'indignation' movie supports the ideology of anti-conservatism, underscoring the importance of freedom of thought, opinion, and individual rights in fighting unjust power structures.
