Abstract
Writing skills are able to predict a person’s success in higher education because the processes involved when composing are indeed able to hone the abilities or skills of a student in academic life. Writing ability is one the factors for writing progress to improve the quality of academic writing. In this way, the researcher conducts this research with the aim of checking the effectiveness of collaborative writing strategy on writing ability of students at eleven grades SMAN 6 Kediri. The aim of this research was to investigate whether there is any significant difference on writing ability between students taught collaborative writing and individual writing.The design on this research was Quasi Experimental research design that used one group as experimental class and another group as controll class. This design used pre-test and post-test to asses students writing ability before and after treatment. The total sample is 68 students from 11th graders of SMAN 6 Kediri. Sample was taken 2 class, one class serving as experimental class XI-1 with 34 students and other class serving as controll class XI-2 with 34 students. Researcher collected data using the pre-test and post-test. Using a quasi-experimental design, the researcher will test the hypothesis developed based on the problem statement by analyzing the data using ANCOVA. The result of this study showed that the mean pre-test in experimental class was 65.44 and the mean control class was 59.32. Besides the mean of post-test in experimental class was 77.85 and the control class was 69.00. The result of ANCOVA showed that The critical value is 0.000 which is less than 0.05. This means that H0 is rejected and Ha is accepted, which means that writing ability varies among students who are taught to use it collaborative writing and individual writing of the 11th graders of SMAN 6 Kediri. It can be concluded that collaborative writing strategy can have impact on the students writing ability.
