Abstract

Speaking is one of important skill in learning language, and it is one of English skills that should be taught in Senior High School level. One genre that should be taught in the tenth grade students is British Parliamentary Debate Style. Speaking is one of essential skill that should be mastered by students. In fact, the students face difficulty to arrange the sentences, fear of making mistakes, and lack of motivation. There are many method can be used to teaching speaking in senior high school. One of them is using British Parliamentary Debate Style. Thus. This research in conducted to know the effectiveness of British Parliamentary Debate Style in Teaching Speaking of the Second Grade Students of MAN 2 KEDIRI. In this research, the researcher uses quasi-experimental design. It means that there are two classes as the experimental and control group. The researcher took XI MIA 3 as the experimental group and XI MIA 4 as the control group. They have the same students [42]. The experimental group was taught by using British Parliamentary Debate Style, while the other group was taught without British Parliamentary Debate Style. The researcher gave speaking test for both groups to collect the data. The formula that was used to analysis was ANCOVA. It was used to determine whether there was a significant difference between students’ score in the experimental group and students’ score in the control group. The result of pre-test shows that the mean score of pre-test of the experimental group was 54.21 and the mean score of the control group was 47.71. The mean score of post-test of the experimental group was 77.55 and the mean score of the control group was 69.83. Based on the data analysis, the result of statistical computation of ANCOVA reveals that the significant value is (p) .000 < .05. Since the significant value was smaller than .05. Statistically, there was enough evidence to reject the null hypothesis, then the alternative hypothesis was received. It means that the students’ who were taught by using British parliamentary debate style got significantly better speaking skill than the students who were taught by problem based learning. Based on the result of the analysis, the researcher concludes that using British parliamentary debate style in teaching speaking of the second grade students of MAN 2 Kediri is effective.
