Abstract

As an International language, English is important to learn by people in the world. In Indonesia. The students success in speaking for the foreign language can be influenced by psychological aspect, in this case, self confidence. When the learners have high self confidence, worry, or fear in English class, they may become difficulty to increase their ability in speaking skill. This study is intended to know whether there is the correlation between students’ self confidence and their speaking skill in the class. Based on the research problem, the purpose of this study is to find out the correlation between the two variables, they are students’ self confidence and their ability in speaking skill. For this study the writer takes tenth grade students at MAN 3 Nganjuk of 2017/2018 academic year as the participants. This research used correlation design with quantitative approach. For the instrument, the writer used two kinds of instruments to collect the data of two variables. The first instrument is questionnaire sheet, adapted from Burton, that contains 20 item with 5 point Likert-Scale. This questionnaire used to measure students level of self confidence. And the second instrument was students’ speaking test. From the test the writer got the score which was compared with another variable to measure the correlation of each other. The writer did not conduct the test by her-self, but she also took speaking score from English teacher to compare that the data are valid. In measuring the correlation, the writer used a theory of Pearson Product Moment. The writer did not calculate it in manual, but used SPSS 21 program in order to make easy and valid. The finding of this research showed the significance (2 tailed), the writer get the 0.366. It means Sig.>0.05 which shows Ha is rejected and H0 is accepted. The result of r calculation for students’ self confidence and their speaking test is 0.085. Based on the table of interpretation of r value, the result of r calculated (0.085) is between 0.000 and 0.200. The result explains that there is no correlation between two variables, students’ self confidence and their speaking test of ten grade students at MAN 3 Nganjuk.
