Abstract

Speaking is one of important skills in learning language, and it is one of English skills that should be taught in Senior High School level. Teaching speaking is important for senior high school to face globalization era in which communication takes an important role in community. To master one of English skill; speaking skill, it needs a strategy. In this research, the strategies which are used are dramatic activities and inside-outside circle method. They are also an interesting way of learning speaking. The students will feel enjoyable in the teaching and learning process. Thus, this research is conducted to know the effectiveness of using dramatic activities compared to inside-outside circle method in teaching speaking for the eleventh grade students of SMAN 4 Kota Kediri. The research design used in this study is quasi experimental, by comparing two groups of the study, experimental group and control group. Every group consists of 30 students. The experimental group was taught by using dramatic activities, and the control group was taught by using inside-outside circle method. Before and after doing treatment, the researcher gave test to the students in the both groups. Those are pre-test and post-test. The result of test was analyzed by using ANCOVA through SPSS16. The result of pre-test shows that the mean score of pre-test of the experimental group was 50.00 and the mean score of the control group was 48.73. The mean score of post-test of the experimental group was 71.00 and the mean score of the control group was 64.87. Based on the data analysis, the result of statistical computation of ANCOVA reveals that the significant value is (p) .000 < .05. Since the significant value was smaller than .05. Statistically, there was enough evidence to reject the null hypothesis, then the alternative hypothesis was received. It means that the students’ who were taught by using dramatic activities got significantly better speaking skill than the students who were taught by inside-outside circle method. Based on the result of the analysis, the researcher concludes that using dramatic activities in teaching speaking for the eleventh grade students of SMAN 4 Kota Kediri is effective.
