Abstract

Reading is one of the basic skills in English. Reading competence is not just to read the text but also to understand the message, purpose and content of the text, which is called reading comprehension. In teaching reading, there are several problems and difficulties that students often experience, such as lack of motivation to learn, boredom in class, difficulty understanding text, and lack of mastery of vocabulary. Therefore, teachers must be able to find solutions to make students interested in reading comprehension, especially in recount text material. One way to make students more interested in reading is to use Two Stay Two Stray as a learning method. This research aims to find significant differences in students' reading comprehension between students who were taught using Two Stay Two Stray and those taught using Think Pair Share on eighth grade recount text material for MTs Negeri 6 Kediri students. This is to prove whether the Two Stay Two Stray method is effective or not effective for increasing student understanding. This research design is quasi-experimental with quantitative research. The population of this study were all students (359) in eighth grade at MTs Negeri 6 Kediri. The samples from this research were classes VIII E, which consist 40 students, and VIII F, which also consist 40 students. This research instrument has been tested (Pre-test and Post-test) in a form of multiple choice with Recount text material. To analyze the data, researchers used Analysis of Covariate (ANCOVA) with the SPSS program version 25. From the results of the ANCOVA assumption test, the results obtained were that: (1) the data was normally distributed, (2) the data variations were homogeneous, (3) there was no interaction between the independent variables and covariates, (4) the relationship between the dependent variables and covariates was proven to be linear. Finally, the ANCOVA test shows that the significant value of 0.027 is less than 0.05. This is sufficient evidence for the null hypothesis (Ho) to be rejected and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) to be accepted. From this statement it can be concluded that there is a significant difference in the reading comprehension of students who are taught using Two Stay Two Stray and those who are taught using Think Pair Share, so it can be said that the Two Stay Two Stray method is proven to be effective in improving students' reading comprehension in recount text material.
