Abstract
The purpose of this study is to analyze the book "Bright An English Course For SMP/MTs Grade VII" by Erlangga publisher in 2022 based on Cunningsworth's criteria theory consisting of eight specific criteria for evaluation to evaluate the utilization of class VII textbooks at MTsN 6 Kediri about the Merdeka Curriculum and its effectiveness as an educational tool for students and teachers. These criteria include aims and approaches, design and organization, language content, skills, topics, methodology, teacher's book, and practical considerations. However, in this study, the researcher only analyzed six criteria that could answer the research questions in the study. The research methodology employed is descriptive qualitative, utilizing Alan's Cunningsworth checklist for course book evaluation. The primary data of this research is an English Textbook entitled “Bright An English Course For SMP/MTs Grade VII”. The book is written by Nur Zaida. It was first published by Erlangga in 2022. Data collection involved documentary research, focusing on the alignment of textbooks with the objectives of the Merdeka Curriculum. Documentary research is the method used in this study to collect data. To analyze the data the researcher uses data reduction, data visualization, and conclusion drawing or verification are the procedures. The results of this study revealed that the textbooks generally conformed to the evaluation criteria set out by Cunningsworth, demonstrated alignment with the objectives and methodology of the Merdeka Curriculum, and offered support for a variety of teaching and learning approaches. The structure and layout of the textbooks were considered effective, although the absence of workbooks and teacher guides was identified as a weakness. While the textbooks adequately cover grammar and encourage the development of speaking skills, they lack complete vocabulary coverage and guidance on language use in writing and conversation. The textbooks address integrated skills, reading and writing tasks, and present diverse and interesting topics. In terms of methodology, the textbooks encourage student involvement and responsibility in learning but lack specific recommendations for improving study skills. In conclusion, this study shows that although textbooks are important educational resources, there are still shortcomings in terms of layout, the inclusion of workbooks and teacher's guides, review sections, cultural context, and writing and conversation guides. Teachers are advised to supplement the learning resources with additional materials to address these shortcomings. In addition, future researchers are advised to further explore these issues to improve the deficiencies.
