Abstract

Information and communication technology (ICT) has become more widely employed in language learning and teaching in the last decade. Social media is one example of ICT. In an EFL context, social media gives students several chances to improve their English language skills. This study aims to find out students' perceptions of using TikTok and Instagram Reels as tools for learning English and to understand the reasons behind these perceptions. The research method is descriptive quantitative, with data collected through a close-ended and open-ended questionnaire. The close-ended questions used a four-point Likert scale (strongly agree, agree, disagree, and strongly disagree), while the open-ended questions aimed to capture the reasons behind the participants' answers. This questionnaire was distributed to 100 active university students. The study results indicate that most students enjoy and appreciate learning English using TikTok and Instagram Reels. They consider these platforms to provide a wealth of easily accessible content and concise, clear explanations, making it easier to understand. This suggests that students perceive using TikTok and Instagram Reels as a positive way of learning English.
