Abstract

The Guided Reading and Summarizing Procedure (GRASP) taught students to summarize independently. Students learn to recall, organize, and selfcorrect information before summarizing through teacher modeling. It highlights the importance of learning how to summarize texts and knowing when summarizing is necessary. The purpose of this study was to measure the effectiveness of GRASP to improve reading comprehension of elevent grade students at SMAN 8 Kediri. In Reading lesson, the students cannot comprehend English text well. So, the researcher is interested to conduct a study about the Effectiveness of GRASP Strategies Toward Reading Comprehension For The Eleventh Grade Students at SMAN 8 Kediri. This Study used a quantitative method with a quasi-experimental design. Which conduct two classes. The Subject of this research are class XI 6 as a experimental group and XI 12 as a control group in teaching narrative text. Each group consists of of 36 students. The procedures of the research were pre-test, treatment, and post-test. To collect the data, the researcher used the instrument that were given in pretest and post-test. Then all the data analyzed using ANCOVA and helped by SPSS application. In this research, the researcher did 5 meeting in both experimental and control group. A meeting for pre-test, 3 meeting for treatment and a meeting for post-test. Based on the calculation, The researchers found that the average score for control group was 55.42 (pre-test) and 65,69 (post-test). The average score for experimental group was 55.97 (pre-test) and 78.61 (post-test). From the data analysis using ANCOVA, the result of significant value is (smaller) 0.000 than 0.05. Hα was accepted while Ho was rejected. It means that there is significant difference in reading comprehension between students who are taught by using GRASP Strategies and students who are taught by using Reading Aloud Strategies. From the study above it can be concluded that GRASP Strategies was effective to improve reading comprehension of eleventh grade students at SMAN 8 Kediri
