Abstract

Reading is an abilty that can never be separated from the educational aspect. There are many factors affecting reading comprehension, namely spelling ability, reading strategies, and so on. The purpose of this research was to find out (1) the correlation betwen spelling ability and reading comprehension (2) the correlation betwen reading strategies and reading comprehension (3) the correlation betwen spelling ability and comprehension. reading strategies toward reading This research used quantitative method with correlational research design. The population of this research was the tenth students of SMKN 2 Kediri. The sample of this research was chosen based on cluster random sampling. The total of sample was 31. Data were collected by using questionnaire and test. To analyze the data, Pearson Product Moment and Multiple Correlation were applied in this research. This research found that the correlation between spelling and reading comprehension was 0.574, with a significance value of 0.001<0.05, it means that the significance value is smaller than 0.05 then Ho is rejected and Ha is accepted. The correlation shows positive relationship which means that the variables have a positive correlation between spelling ability and reading ccomprehension with interpretation: moderate relationship. Then, the result of the correlation between reading strategies and reading comprehension was 0.756, with a significance value of 0.000<0.05, it means that the significance value is smaller than 0.05 then Ho is rejected and Ha is accepted. The correlation correlation shows positive relationship which means that the variables have a positive correlation between reading strategies and reading comprehension with interpretation: high relationship. Furthermore, the result of the correlation between spelling ability and reading strategies toward reading comprehension r= 0.792 with a significance value of 0.000<0.05, it means that the significance value is smaller than 0.05 then Ho is rejected and Ha is accepted. The result shows positive relationship with strong category so it can be concluded that spelling ability and reading strategies both have correlation with reading comprehension.
