Abstract

This research on the effectiveness of using genre-based approach to teaching reading comprehension of grade VIII students in MTsN 1 Kediri. This is an approach developed into four phases, namely Building Knowledge of the Field (BKOF), Modeling the text, Joint Construction of The Text (JCOT), and Independent Construction of Text (ICOT). The Genre-Based Approach is a learning approach that focuses on teaching and learning languages based on genre (type of text). This approach aims to help students develop effective communication skills in a variety of language contexts and situations. After applying the Genre Based Approach, students dare to present the results of discussions in front of the class properly and correctly and full of confidence. Students become more active in learning because the discussion method makes them free to give opinions to each other. The purpose of this study is to determine whether the use of Genre Based Approach is effective or not as an approach to teach students' reading comprehension, especially in eighth grade students in MTsN 1 Kediri. The design of this study was a quasi experimental that consist of experimental group and control group. The experimental group was applied genre based approach and the control group was applied scientific approach. The population is grade VIII MTsN 1 Kediri students. The samples are two classes VIII-A and VIII-C. Both of the class equaly consist of 34 students. The data was collected by using test, which include pretest and posttest. The mann whitney u test was used with the SPSS program 24.0 version. The result of this study was analyzed by using Mann Whitney because the data was not distributed normal. The outcome showed that there was a significant difference between the experimental group and the control group. It can be seen from the mean scores. The mean score of the experimental group was 81.62 while the mean score of the control group was 68.24. The analysis indicated that the experimental group's mean score, which was taught by using genre based approach was higher than the control group's score, which was taught by applying scientific approach. The result of data analysis showed that the significant value is less than 0.05, that is 0.000. It indicates that the alternative hypothesis is accepted and the null hypothesis is rejected. Based on the result that the use of genre based approach is effective to teach reading comprehension.
