Abstract

Vocabulary is the main thing that needs to be learned in English education, especially in elementary school. However, researcher found that elementary school students' vocabulary mastery from Madrasah Ibtidaiyah (MI) Al Irsyad Al Islamiyyah Kota Kediri below the expected level. In this case, the researcher offers an alternative method in teaching vocabulary. One of the methods that can be used in teaching vocabulary is Spelling Bee. Therefore, the objective of this research is to find out the significance of Spelling Bee in teaching vocabulary at elementary school. Nevertheless, the researcher limited this research into receptive vocabulary in accordance with school curriculum of fourth grade students. The researcher conduct quasi experimental research as the research design. This research is conducted at MI Al Irsyad Al Islamiyyah Kota Kediri. The population of this research consisted of fourth-grade students, comprising four classes. The researcher selected two classes, each consisting of 30 students, as the samples for the research. The experimental group was class IV-A and the control group was IV-C. The researcher used pretest and posttest to collect the data and then analyzed its by using ANCOVA in SPSS 25. The result of the research showed that the result of experimental group’s posttest was higher than the control group. The mean of experimental group’s posttest was 69.40 while mean of control group’s posttest was 65.87. In addition, the result of ANCOVA showed that the p-value was lower than α (0.010 < 0.050). It indicated that there was difference between students who are taught by Spelling Bee and students who are taught by lecturing method. Moreover, the mean of experimental group in Estimated Marginal Means was higher than control group. It indicated that Spelling Bee had postitive impact on teaching vocabulary compared to lecturing method. The result showed that Spelling Bee also had positive impact to the students’ receptive vocabulary in recognozing the word form and meaning. Furthermore, young learners’ characteristics were appropriate with Spelling Bee that was fun, using words, and incorporate physical activity. In conclusion, the use of Spelling Bee is effective and it can be used as alternative in teaching vocabulary especially at elementary school.
