Abstract

Reading is one of the core activities of study. It is needed in every level field of study. It is important that able to understand what is being delivered. In understanding a text, people need to do an activity that is reading. Sometimes, the students are difficult to comprehend the text. In MTsN 8 Kediri, the teacher still teaches using traditional method, teacher center. The teacher teaches reading just explaining and giving the meaning for each new vocabulary to students. In this case, Snowball Throwing technique can be applied in order to improve their reading comprehension in recount text. The research uses Classroom Action Research (CAR) on this study; the researcher will collaborate with English teacher as collaborator on the class. This research consists of two cycles. Each cycle consists of two meetings. The participants of this research are 36 students. The research instruments are reading test, observation checklist, and field-note. The result of the research; the students mean score was 73,5. 19 students got good score and 17 students got poor score. The percentage of students achievement was 52,8%. It didn’t reach the criteria of success in study. So, the researcher revised the plan and continues to the next cycle. In cycle 2, the mean score of students become was 77.8, 30 students got good score. The percentage of students achievement has become 83,33%. It has increased 25.5%. It has reached the criteria of the success which was more than 75% students and with score is more than 75. Besides, the students’ score reached the criteria of success, observation checklist showed that 94,4% students were active in teaching and learning process of reading using Snowball Throwing technique. It can be concluded that the use of Snowball Throwing technique that was applied for eighth grade of MTsN 8 Kediri was qualified to be able to improve the students’ achievement in reading recount text.
