Abstract

English is only a local content or additional subject in Elementary school. Based on the preliminary study, most of students think that English is difficult and it is not interesting for them. It makes some difficulties to the students to master the vocabulary. To overcome the problem, the researcher implemented the Lazanov method as a method in improving the students’ vocabulary. The design of this study is Classroom Action Reaserch (CAR) which starts from preliminary study continued by planning, implementing of action, observation and reflecting. The subject of the study was the fifth-grade students’ of MI Fattakhul Irsyad Nganjuk academic year 2013-2014. There are 9 students. To collect data, the researcher used some instruments i.e. observation checklists, field notes, and individual quiz. The findings indicate that the students are active during the vocabulary class presentation and vocabulary individual quizzes improve after the implementation of the action. The improvement is shown by the increase of the percentage which is over the criterion of success. The criteria of success are cognitive and attitude learning outcomes. For the cognitive learning outcomes, 70% of students achieve the mastery of ≥ 70 or the class average is ≥ 70. For the attitude learning outcomes, 70% of students’ activity has done in the observation checklist. In cycle 1, the criterion of success was not fulfilled. In cognitive learning outcomes, there were only 44, 44% of the students who were successful and the class average were only 54, 22. For attitude learning outcomes, a specific criterion had not been fulfilled in observation checklist. In the cycle 2, both cognitive and attitude learning outcome were not fulfilled. The cognitive learning outcome was only 11, 11% and the class average was only 41, 67. For the attitude learning outcome, there was specific criteria had not been fulfilled. But, in the cycle 3 the result was break the criteria of success. In cognitive learning outcome, there were 77, 78% students were succeed and the class average was 76, 89. In attitude learning outcomes, all students were fulfilled the criteria of success in the observation checklist. The developments in instructional strategies in the cycles are: musical background, motivational statements, and the body language presentation. Based on the result of the study, the researcher concluded that Lazanov method can improve students’ vocabulary at the fifth-grade of MI Fattakhul Irsyad Nganjuk. The researcher would like to suggest to the other teachers to use this method in teaching vocabulary especially for fifth-grade elementary students.
