Abstract
Some English learners have difficulty in mastering vocabulary. It is caused by some reasons. Those are 1) The students are not familiar with English words. 2) The pronunciation is different from the word so it affects the way they write the word. 3) They have low motivation in learning English because they are not too interested in it. MA AL Manar Prambon is one of Senior High Schools which teach English as one of its subject, however, the lack of vocabulary is one of problems that faced by the students especially class XI IPS-1. Because there is no specific strategy in improving the student’s vocabulary mastery in the class, therefore the researcher is interested in conducting a study about teaching vocabulary mastery through English-subtitled videos. The research design of this study is classroom action research (CAR) in which the researcher was assisted by a collaborator in conducting the research. The subject of this research is class XI IPS-1 of MA AL Manar Prambon. The procedure of the research consists of four main steps: planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. To collect data, the researcher did observation and test. The instruments used in the research are observation checklist test. The research findings indicate that the students are active during the teaching and learning process. The student’s vocabulary mastery improves after the treatment through English-subtitled videos. The improvement is shown by the increase of the percentage of the students’ achievement in achievement test. The criterion of success of this research is the students’ achievement with the percentage of 80% students got score 78 minimally. In cycle 1, the percentage of the successful students is 71,8 %. In cycle 2, the percentage of successful students is 92,3%. Based on the observation checklist, the students’ activity increased from 57,7% in cycle 1 to 92,3%. Therefore, we can conclude that English-subtitled videos are able to improve the student’s vocabulary mastery of class XI IPS-1 of MA AL Manar Prambon.
