Abstract
Communication is one of the main parts in our daily activities to express our feelings, emotions, and ideas to others. People will communicate well and effectively by using their mother tongue. It is different when they use second or foreign language. If people speak in foreign language, they usually feel difficult to communicate their idea. The feeling of fear or anxiety while communicate with the others is called communication apprehension. It becomes one of the problems of second or foreign language learners. The aim of this study is to know the correlation between students’ communication apprehension and their speaking skill. This study uses quantitative method. The research design of this study is correlational research. This study uses correlational research because the researcher wants to know the correlation between the students’ communication apprehension and their speaking skill. The subject of this study is the second semester students of English Department STAIN Kediri. The researcher uses questionnaire and speaking test as instruments. The questionnaire is used to measure the students’ level of communication apprehension while the speaking test is used to measure the speaking skill. The researcher also uses speaking rubric as the guidance in scoring the students’ speaking skill. Kendall’s tau coefficient in IBM SPSS Statistics 21 is used to analyze the data. The result showed that we do not have enough evidence to reject the null hypothesis (Ho). It means that there is no significance correlation between students’ communication apprehension and their speaking skill, as evidenced by P (0.149) > α (0.05). However, more research is needed to support the findings and discover more about communication apprehension in the classroom.
