Abstract

ABSTRACT Sahda Agung Dinata (2023). Using Focus Group Discussion to Improve Ability in Speaking Skill at Class VII in SMPN 16 Gresik . Thesis, Department of English Language Education, Faculty of Tarbiyah, State Islamic Institute (IAIN)of Kediri. Advisors: (1) Dr. Toyyibah,SS, M.Pd. (2) Dr. Ary Setya B.N. M.Pd. Keywords: Speaking Skill, Teaching Speaking, FGD. A sufficient speaking is required to construct communication . As a result, the researcher used an approach in the classroom to stimulate students to learn language. The purpose of this study is to improve the speaking skill mastery of the seventh-grade students at SMPN 16 Gresik in the academic year 2023/2024 by using Focus Group Discussion. This study was carried out though classroom action research. The subject of the research was VII A and the total of them was 32. The procedure of the research used two cycles namely cycle I students average score is 73 and the students are 14 students (48,5%) students are completed and 18 students (56,3%) did not complete and for cycle II The researcher found there are 25 students (75%) students complete using this method and there are 7 students (25%) students did not complete using this method. Every cycle had four steps namely planning, implementing, observing and reflecting. The result of this research showed that the effective way in implementation using Focus Group Discussion to improve students’ speaking applied in learning outcomes cycle 1 score was 68 and cycle II was 88. It can be categorized student learning outcomes improve. The appropriate way to teach to improve speaking skills using FGD are: (1) The researcher explained the teaching objectives to be and related how to use the method Focus Group Discussion to students. (2) The researcher divided students into 8 groups. Each group consists of 4 students. (3) teacher begins teaching when the students are ready, and each group is given 30 minutes to identify the pictures (4) Then students and teachers give each other questions or opinions about the description of the media. (5) The teacher gives gifts to the group that has the highest score.
