Abstract
Teaching speaking is a very critical part of teaching English. The potential to talk inside the goal language genuinely and correctly contributes to the achievement of the freshmen at school and at college tiers. consequently, it's miles important that English teachers and teachers pay extremely good interest to teaching speaking as opposed to main college students to study grammar via memorization alone. English teachers and lecturers need to offer rich surroundings in which meaningful communique takes vicinity. In the process of learning to speak, students are often encountered some problems. Related to the problems above, the researcher should choose the best technique in teaching speaking to the students. One of the teaching techniques in teaching speaking is describing picture. Based on these reasons, the aims to find out how can strategies to improve Students’ speaking ability through describing picture. The design of this research was classroom action research. This Classroom Action Research is implemented for the purpose of improving the seven grade Students of SMPN 16 Gresik through describing picture technique. This study employed a CAR methodology in the classroom. It consisted of the steps of planning, action, evaluation, and revision. The writer employed descriptive text as material for the orderly preparation that would become lessons based on the currently used curriculum. It taken from English text books for the seven grade students of junior high school.The result of cycle I showed that there was six students or 18,75% who passed mastery criterion. Based on criteria of success classroom, that was 75% of students achieve the score equal or greater than 75 as the minimum mastery criterion. Because the score of cycle I wasn’t met criteria, the reseacher continue to the second cycle. The result of cycle II showed that there are 25 students or 78,10% whose score pass the mastery criterion. Related to criteria of success clasroom, the result of cycle II fulfilled the target of criteria of success that was 75% of the students got 75 or more. Automatically, it can be said that Improving Students’ speaking ability through describing picture can improve students’ speaking skill.
