Abstract

Pancasila, as the philosophical foundation of the Republic of Indonesia, encompasses five principles that shape the nation's values and identity. To enhance students' understanding of Pancasila and its relevance in contemporary society by creating engaging and informative reading materials, this research is implemented. The materials incorporate three profil of Pancasila principle: independence, mutual cooperation, global diversity. Additionally, the content is presented in an age-appropriate manner, considering the cognitive and emotional development of junior high school students. The purpose of this research is to develop supplementary reading material in English descriptive text material based on the merdeka curriculum, as it is the latest curriculum that lacks of supplementary reading material. This is a Research and Development (R&D) study. The research procedure followed the reading material design proposed by Borg and Gall (2003). There are seven stages: 1) Needs analysis, 2) Product development, 3) Expert validation, 4) First revision, 5) Field test, 6) second revision, 7) final product. The research data consists of qualitative and quantitative data. Qualitative data were gathered through interviews to understand students' needs in reading, particularly descriptive text. Questionnaires were given to experts and students to evaluate reading material. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. The product of this research is English supplementary reading material based on the merdeka curriculum. Based on the expert assessment and responses of validation, it can be concluded that supplementary reading materials are appropriate to be used as a tool to support students' reading material, especially grade 7E junior high school students in SMPN 3 Kota Kediri. The result of this study indicates that the range of interests is 50% - 74% meaning that the reading material is categorized “Good. Meanwhile, the mean score of the students is 72,25. The conclusion of the results showed that the reading material is appropriate as a tool to support literacy program of junior high school of grade 7. Additionally, the data shows that they like to read reading materials written in English with clear letters and colorful pictures. Three students profiles of Pancasila inspire other students to be enthusiastic about learning.
