Abstract
Personality of humans exists to define their behavior, how they would act toward their surroundings. In this study, personality would be analyzed through the characters of a literature work. The personality analysis will be based on Map of The Soul theory by Carl Gustav Jung. This study’s objectives consist of analyzing the main characters’ personality and their efforts to have a good personality based on the Map of The Soul theory. This study is conducted using descriptive qualitative research design. The object of this study is the novel titled Fault Lines by Emily Itami. Mizuki, Tatsuya and Kiyoshi are the three main characters that will be analyzed based on the theory that consists of Persona, Shadow and Ego as the elements. With the researcher as the instrument, the data is collected based on the researcher’s analysis by reading the novel thoroughly to identify the characters’ personalities and their efforts based on the theory of Map of The Soul. This study comes up with the results of the main characters’ personality and the efforts done by them to have a good personality based on Map of The Soul theory. Each character’s personalities are categorized into Persona and Shadow to identify the opposite characters in them. The efforts they have made to have a good personality by fighting the Shadow were mainly influenced by the Ego. The Ego was able to lead them to be aware of their faults, to do self-reflect in order to be determined not to repeat the same mistake again in the future.
