Abstract

Translation is the interpretation of the meaning of the text from the source language to produce an equivalent text in the target language that communicates a similar message. It is considered very important because translation can open up the language for learners, by learning through translation, will begin to try to understand the language and learn how it works. This way, it will be easier to form sentences or see the differences between the two languages. In translating, students face several obstacles such as their low motivation to participate and be active in class activities, and the media used by the teacher is monotonous. These factors make the process of learning to read unable to achieve its goals. Therefore, researches use the Duolingo application as a learning medium to overcome this problem. The purpose of this study is to find out whether the Duolingo application can be an effective medium for improving translation. The author conducted research in class XI SMAN 3 Kediri in the 2023 academic year. This study used a classroom action research design. The author designed lesson plans, observed student scores with pre- cycle tests, cycle 1 tests and cycle 2 tests. The data collected were mostly qualitative in nature although there were some quantitative data. Qualitative data were obtained by observing the teaching and learning process during the implementation of the action, interviewing students, and holding discussions with the English teacher. Meanwhile, quantitative data was obtained by assessing student worksheets. The results showed that the use of the Duolingo application succeeded in making students able to understand translation. This can be seen from the results of the pre-cycle, cycle 1 test and cycle 2 test. The pre-cycle average value was 63.68 and for the first cycle test was 89.78, while the second cycle test was 94.63. In other words, there is a significant influence from the Duolingo application. This means that the use of the Duolingo application in teaching English is effectively applied to class XI students of SMAN 3 Kediri.
