Abstract
Writing is a form of ability that communicates ideas by applying structured written language to build understanding and inform readers about what the author has written. Descriptive text is to describe something clearly about people, places, objects, or events using appropriate details. So this means writing descriptive text is the activity's ability to describe something about people, places, objects, and so on. This study aims to analyze the abilities and difficulties of class VIII C students of SMP Raudlatul Muta'allin Lamongan in writing descriptive texts. This research method is qualitative research. In this study, students of VIII C SMP Raudlatul Muta'allimin Lamongan, consisting of 26 students, served as research subjects and data sources. Data collection techniques used were writing tests and interviews. In this study, the researcher analyzed the text focusing on content, organization (identification and description), grammar, vocabulary, and writing mechanics (spelling, punctuation, and capitalization). The results of students' abilities and difficulties in writing descriptive text are shown, first, the average total score of students' abilities is 54.4 (Fair) which shows that students' abilities in writing descriptive text are still low and still need a lot of improvement. Second, students' difficulties in writing descriptive text. The major difficulty faced by students was mechanics, students had many difficulties in spelling words. The second difficulty was grammar, students had difficulty in using the simple present rule. The third difficulty was vocabulary, students had difficulty using the correct vocabulary. The fourth difficulty was organization, students had difficulty distinguishing between identification paragraphs and description paragraphs. And the last difficulty was content, students had difficulty developing words into sentences and making paragraphs.
