Abstract

Writing is a mean of communication that allows individuals to share ideas, defend opinions, and express feelings. In writing, many students cannot use English well in writing. Many students think writing is a difficult and boring activity because they find some problems when writing. Besides that, cubing technique as an alternative in teaching that could be used in teaching writing. Cubing technique is a kind of prewriting techniques that shows the ideas by using six sides of the cube. The six sides are describe, compare, associate, analyze, apply, and argue. Cubing technique can help the students to improve their writing skill. The aim of this research is to know the effectiveness of using cubing technique in teaching writing descriptive text for the seventh-grade students of MTs PSM Sugihwaras Nganjuk. The design of this research was quasi-experimental. The population was the students of class VII in MTs PSM Sugihwaras. The samples were two classes that named experimental and control class. The experimental class was class VII-B that consists of 25 students, meanwhile the control class was class VII-A consists of 25 students. The researcher used tests as the instrument of the research. The experimental class was taught by using cubing technique and the control class was taught by free-writing. In analyzing data, the researcher used Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA) by SPSS Program 25 version. The result of this research showed that significant value was 0.000 (p < α 0.05). It means the null hypothesis is rejected and the alternative hypothesis is accepted. There is significant difference between students’ score in experimental class and control class. The mean scores of students in the experimental class who were taught using the cubing technique got higher scores than the scores of students in the control class who were taught using free-writing. It can be concluded that cubing technique is effective in teaching writing for the seventh-grade students at MTs PSM Sugihwaras Nganjuk.
