Abstract

The movie is an influential medium for human life, in terms of communication and moral values. In the movie, utterances that are spoken by the speakers can be analyzed as a study of illocutionary acts because their utterances may contain certain meaning. This thesis aims to analyze the illocutionary acts of speech act used by the main characters in Ratatouille movie script. The researcher uses the descriptive qualitative method, which is used scripts movie as data for describing the data analysis. This research has several ways to analyze the data. After reading the script to separate for which types of illocutionary act. The data of the research are 186 utterances of types illocutionary act, which contain five types of act. Based on Searle’s theory (1976) the types of the illocutionary act there are five kinds of the types, those are; representative, directive, commissive, expressive, and declarative. From this research, the researcher finds five types of illocutionary acts. For the accuracy from the data analysis in this research are; representative 98 (52,6%). Directive 61 (32,7%), commissive 2 (1,0%), expressive 18 (9,6%), declarative 8 (3,7%). Based on that accuracy the most dominant used on the illocutionary act by main characters utterances in Ratatouille is representative. Representative is used in this movie because its function is to assert the state of the context to give deep understanding to the viewer. This study is expected to entertain English Foreign Language (EFL) learners to understand the analysis of illocutionary acts in the movie by using Searles’ theory
