Abstract

WhatsApp is one of the online learning platforms used by students at IAIN Kediri, including students of the English Department during the Covid-19 Pandemic. Almost all courses can be accessed via WhatsApp including Extensive Reading. The aims of this study is to identify and describe the perceptions of students of the Department of English towards the use of WhatsApp in the Extensive Reading Class. This research method was quantitative research and the design of this research was survey research. The sample of this research is 52 students. Questionnaires and interviews were used to collected the data for this study. The questionnaire consists of 15 items which are divided into a fourth part, the first part is about Performance Expectancy, the second part is Effort Expectancy, the third part is Social influence, and the last part is Facilitating Condition. The results of this study indicated that learning reading through WhatsApp gets a positive perception from students. It was found that for the first aspect, from a total sample of 52 students, 90.4% of students had positive perceptions about performance expectations. For negative statements, 42% of students have negative perceptions, In the second aspect, for positive statements, 87.7% of students have a positive perception of business expectations. For negative statements, 42.7% of students have negative perceptions. In the third aspect, for positive statements, 64.5% of students have a positive perception of social influence. For negative statements, 41.3% of students have negative perceptions. In the last aspect, for negative statements, 50.6% of students have negative aspects. Most of the participants said that WhatsApp is easy to use anywhere and anytime. The free feature facility helps students to learn English and also saves time. In the other hand, student inform that they have poor internet connection so that they feel bored. The solution faced by students is to find good connections, manage time as best as possible. Therefore, WhatsApp can be used for learning English in the 4th semester of reading class at IAIN Kediri.
