Abstract

Reading is available to be an important thing for Indonesian students. It can help them to enlarge their knowledge especially in an English textbook, either to obtain information and message for scientific purpose or just for relaxation. The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of the use of PQ4R stratregy in teaching reading comprehension at MAN 2 Nganjuk. This research methodology uses a quasi-experimental design with the treatment held in three meetings, 2 x 45 minutes for each class. This design uses a pre-test and post-test to determine students' reading abilities before treatment and after treatment. The population of this research is the students of class X MAN 2 Nganjuk. Samples were taken two classes, one class as an experimental class was class X MIPA 1 and the other as a control class was class X IPS 1. Each class consist of 35 students. In collecting data, researcher used instruments in pre-test and post-test. After giving a post-test, the researcher then analyzed the data using SPSS 16.0. After analyzing the data, the results of this study have shown that the data was normally distributed. Kolmogrov-Smirnov significant value was .183 (Sig. > α) for pre-test of experimental, .093 (Sig. > α) for pre-test control, .117 (Sig. > α) for post-test experimental, and .111 (Sig. > α) for post-test control. The Levene's Test shows that the experimental and control group has the same ability. The result was F (1, 68) = .224, p = .638. That was, p (.638) > α (.05). Then, the homogeneity regression shown that 331 > 0.05. as the result above, it means that there is no interaction between covariate and independent variables. The last assumption is the output of ANCOVA showed that the significant value was 0.028 < 0.05. there is reason to reject the null hypothesis and accepted the alternative hypothesis. Based on the result above, the researcher concludes that PQ4R strategy is the effective strategy in teaching reading comprehension.
