Abstract

Writing is one of the productive skills in learning English. It is an activity of expressing ideas. To convey ideas in writing, there are several types of text that can be used, one of which is descriptive text. The vocabulary and sentences used in writing activities need to be clear so that they are easily understood by the reader. In writing a text, students still experience difficulties in learning English. They tend to have difficulty understanding grammar, especially the simple present tense. So it cannot be denied that these difficulties resulted in students making errors in writing descriptive texts. To avoid these problems, this research was conducted to find out the type and the errors frequency that occur in students’ writing using simple present tense. Beside that, the reasearcher also discuss about the possible factors that cause students to make errors to find out the factor that caused students’ errors. This study uses a qualitative descriptive research method to answer the objectives of this research. The subjects of this study were students of class VII-I in MTsN 7 Kediri. The researcher collects the results of students' writing in writing descriptive text with a total of 30 texts as the object to be studied. After the data has been collected, the researcher begins to analyze the existing data. Researchers use the theory of Dulay, Burt, and Krashen (1982) as a theory to analyze the data. Based on the analysis that has been done, the final results show that there are three types of errors made by students, namely omission, addition, and misformation. The frequency of errors made by students is omission with a percentage of 53%, misformation at 31%, and the last is addition at 16%. The possible factors that cause errors made by students occur due to interlingual factors which are caused by the influence of the mother tongue, intralingual factors which are caused by a lack of student knowledge, and learning context factors which are caused by students' learning experience and the role of the teacher or assistant during the learning process.
