Abstract

Self-efficacy has an important role for students in learning language. However, speaking is regarded as one of the most important language abilities to master. It has a tremendous influence on how students act, speak, and respond to numerous circumtances and stimuli in their surroundings. Therefore, this study aims to determine whether there is a significant correlation between students' self-efficacy and speaking ability at SMAN 4 Kota Kediri. This study employed a quantitative method with a correlational design. The research utilized a questionnaire instrument with a Likert scale to measure students’ self-efficacy, and a test instrument to measure their speaking ability. The questionnaires and tests were administrated to 65 students in grades X-8 and X-9 at SMAN 4 Kota Kediri. The data obtained were analyzed using SPSS 22 and Microsoft Excel. Additionally, the hypothesis of the study was tested using the Pearson product-moment correlation formula. Based on the finding of this study, a correlation coefficient value of 0.539 was obtained. This means the value of the correlation coefficient is 0.539 > 0.05. Also, based on the rtable it is known that 0.539 > 0.244 (ɑ = 5%, N = 65). In addition, based on the results of the sig. (2. tailed) obtained 0.000 < 0.05 which means that students' self-efficacy and students' speaking ability have a correlation. Then, it can be said that the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted, and the null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected. This also indicates that the variable (X) of students' self-efficacy and variable (Y) of students' speaking ability have a significant correlation with a moderate degree of correlation, and have a positive relationship. In other words, if the level of self-efficacy of students is higher, it is also expected that the level of students' speaking ability will also be higher. Thus, it can be concluded that students' self-efficacy and speaking abilities at SMAN 4 Kota Kediri have a significant correlation, with a moderate level of correlation
